Navigating the Summer Holidays: A Parent’s Guide to Balance and Connection

By Barefoot Coaching

For many parents, the six-week holidays can evoke a mix of emotions. While you may relish the chance to have more time with your children, you may also feel apprehensive. This could be because of several reasons:

  • Increased demand on your time and energy
  • Limited access to usual resources and your child’s usual social networks
  • Juggling multiple responsibilities like balancing work, childcare, and other commitments without adequate support
  • Logistics of childcare and available annual leave
  • Pressure to provide enriching experiences for children, even with limited financial resources
  • Setting (and sticking to) boundaries for technology use versus other activities

While the six-week holidays certainly come with their share of challenges, we want to share some tools to give you an opportunity to slow down, reconnect as a family, and appreciate the little moments together.

Your Family Right Now
How does it feel to live in your family right now?

  • What aspects are you enjoying?
  • What would you like to enjoy more?
  • What can help you with that?

Things Your Children Can Do
Spend a few minutes thinking about your daily routine. What things do you do that your children could get involved in? What do you do for them that they could now tackle on their own? Make a note of things that come to mind.

From your list, pick one thing for each child that you think would make a big difference to you, perhaps by freeing up more time, or to them, by giving them a sense of achievement.

Think about how you will make this change.

Is there anything you need to do to prepare yourself or your child? How will you know you’ve been successful at making the change happen? How will your child know?

On Being a Parent

  • What did you use to spend time on before becoming a parent?
  • What else are you doing now, besides being a parent?
  • How well do you think you are looking after yourself?
  • What would you like to change about YOUR life?

The more you look after yourself, the better you are able to look after others, and the happier you are likely to be. You will also be giving your children some very valuable messages about your worth and their own if they become parents!

Coaching Cards: A Tool for Reflection and Connection
What are coaching cards?

Coaching cards are decks of cards with thought-provoking questions, prompts, or statements designed to stimulate personal growth. They cover various topics, and users can randomly draw or select them to engage in self-coaching exercises, spark conversations, or prompt introspection. Anyone can use these cards to enhance personal and professional development.

How do I use them?

  • Split the Deck: Sort cards into comfortable and challenging questions. Pick one from each to ponder alone or discuss with someone else.
  • Shuffle and Spark Conversations: Draw a card randomly to ignite coaching dialogues with others or for personal reflection.
  • Daily Reflection: Keep the deck handy by your bedside or on your desk. Dedicate just 5 minutes daily to answer a question.

Coaching Cards for Children

These cards are designed to help parents and children understand each other better. Use them to spark great conversations in the car, at the dinner table, on holiday, or at bedtime. Pick a card at random or involve your child in choosing a question they would like to answer. Remember to listen to their answers first, aiming to do so with genuine interest, with care and without any distractions or hurry.

Coaching Cards for Grandparents

Many children have the opportunity to spend time with grandparents and extended family during the holidays. This pack contains 25 questions for grandparents to ask their grandchildren and 25 questions for grandchildren to ask their grandparents. You could take turns asking each other questions at random, choose a question for each other to answer, or each choose a question that you would like to answer. Listen to each other with care and attention and enjoy where the conversation takes you.

By incorporating these tools and reflections into your routine, you can transform the six-week holidays from a period of stress into an opportunity for growth, connection, and joy for the whole family.

Barefoot more than lived up to its fantastic reputation when I experienced the course. My 5 months with them was one of the most significant and meaningful things I have done in my career of over 30 years. Solid and well planned content, exceptional tutors, and the chance to grow and learn alongside my wonderful cohort of fellow Barefooters. I've been able to bring valuable new skills to my business. Thank you!

I knew as soon as I found Barefoot that it was the organisation for me to train with. They share my values and ethos. They did not disappoint! The course was one of the most positive experiences of my life. The tutors, the integrity and care woven through like a golden thread, the approach, methods and thoroughness, amount of practice time, the cohort - all perfect. I left feeling well equipped to go out into the world to coach with a great range of tools and techniques under my belt, and a desire to develop more of my own. I have built lasting connections and relationships with some wonderful people. I enrolled on the post-grad certificate to further develop and fine tune my skills. I cannot recommend Barefoot enough. Thank you!

An amazing 12 days with the Barefoot Team working on Personal and Business Coaching. The tutors are incredibly knowledgeable, the theory wide-ranging and the practical sessions varied and valuable. I'd recommend this course and the Barefoot Team to anyone.

I chose Barefoot to consolidate my training as a coach in 2016. Everyone I spoke to beforehand about coach training providers said that Barefoot was the only choice - and they were so right Great tutors and course materials. Brilliant challenge and support. Excellent venues. You are made to feel part of Barefoot from day one . Lots of folk have said it, but life changing is the only way I can describe my experiences with Barefoot.

I recently completed the taught modules of the Postgraduate Certificate in Business and Personal Coaching with Barefoot. I wanted to be exposed to a broad range of coaching ideas, to have plenty of time to practice coaching and receive feedback and to meet like minded people who shared my passion. I was not disappointed. I loved every minute of the modules and was sad when the programme finally came to an end. Our cohort has been amazing and we continue to engage with each other via webinars and get togethers organised by ourselves. At no point in the process did I have any feeling that Barefoot was interested in selling places on this or other programmes. It was all about getting a good fit between you as a coach and their offerings. Great people. Very professionally run. Great materials. A good range of tutors from different backgrounds. All delivered with wonderful warmth and passion. Can't recommend highly enough.

What an amazing program, it has changed my life, I didn't know what I was going to use the training for or how it would change things for me or the people around me. It has proved the best decision yet 😁

I trained with Barefoot Coaching and can highly recommend the course. The breadth of learning and approaches, together with the great tutors and a very supportive cohort of students allowed me to challenge my existing thinking and develop as a coach in a way that was authentic to me. Completing the essays for Chester University also offered the opportunity to underpin the experiential learning with some academic rigor. The Barefoot team are all warm, friendly people and a pleasure to be around.
