I have been reflecting on my commitment to coaching supervision and it has taken me on a trip down memory lane. Here is an extract from “The Coaching Circular” – a magazine for Barefooters which I launched in 2006 and here is an article I wrote for the ICF in 2015. Both demonstrating my belief in the importance of coaching supervision and the newsletter also demonstrating the phenomenal changes in design technology over the years!
I have been supervising coaches and training coaching supervisors for the past twenty years and I remain passionate about the value and importance of supervision for coaches.
Here are just some of the many benefits of being a Coaching Supervisor:
Improved Self-Awareness
Being a supervisor requires constant self-reflection and exploration of your own biases, triggers, and boundaries.
Expanded Career Opportunities
Being a trained supervisor increases your professional offerings – both 1:1 and group supervision. It can open doors to working with organizations which require supervision for their coaches.
Enhanced Reflective Practice
Being a supervisor encourages an ongoing commitment to reflective practice, allowing you to assess your impact as a coach and continually refine your skills, thinking and questioning.
Stronger Ethical Foundation
Training as a supervisor deepens your understanding of ethical coaching practices and boundary issues, which can in turn strengthen your own coaching practice.
Having a bird’s-eye view of the coaching world
As a supervisor, you gain insights into emerging trends, the challenges coaches are facing, and the real-world issues which are surfacing for their clients.
Support for the Coaching Profession
As a supervisor, you contribute to maintaining and raising the overall standards and credibility of the coaching profession.
Continuous learning – from every client
Your supervision clients’ unique perspectives, challenges, knowledge and experiences challenge your own thinking and keep your own coaching practice evolving.
“If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it”
