15 qualities of a team coach

Working as a team coach is not for the faint-hearted! In addition to an understanding of adult learning principles, experience of facilitating groups, a recognized qualification in coaching, an understanding of group dynamics and a grasp of organisational life and culture, a team coach should have the following qualities and attributes:

  1. Self-knowledge and self-awareness
  2. Ability to tolerate and embrace ambiguity
  3. Patience and perseverance
  4. Courage to manage conflict and resistance
  5. Seeing, hearing, listening and communicating with integrity and in an adult to adult way
  6. Psychological literacy and understanding of unconscious group processes
  7. Ability to inhabit the team’s world
  8. Commitment to regular CPD and supervision
  9. Curiosity and warmth towards others
  10. Awareness of own biases and judgements
  11. Ability to think on his/her feet under pressure
  12. Tact and resilience to forge good working relationships with different members of the team and the organisation at large
  13. Gravitas, presence and credibility
  14. A sense of professional ethics guiding the work
  15. Being able to provide a ‘safe container’ for the group and maintain clear boundaries
