This is a lively and accessible short course introducing Freud’s psychodynamic theories and those of some of his followers. The course is suitable to any coaches who are interested in deepening their knowledge of Freud’s work, understanding its relevance to coaching and the potential for practical application in coaching of some psychodynamic theories.
There will be opportunities for discussion and small group work.

- The ‘Shadow Self’
- Understanding how unconscious patterns and conflicts might influence clients’ decisions or behaviours.
- Noticing how the id, ego and superego dynamics might show up in a client’s self-talk, goals, or struggles.
- Identifying how defence mechanisms may play a role in client resistance or self-sabotaging behaviours.
- Thinking about how universal archetypes (e.g., hero, caregiver) influence individual narratives.
- Exploring the “shadow self” as the parts of oneself that are suppressed or denied. Encouraging clients to embrace their full self to foster personal growth.
- Recognizing how transference and counter-transference might emerge in the coach-client relationship.
- Differences between coaching and therapy.
