Professional supervision is essential for coaches. Supervision provides a safe, supportive space to reflect, re-energise and review your coaching practice.

Supervision is either 1:1 or in a group and is led by a qualified coach supervisor. The purpose of coaching supervision is to gain objectivity and perspective on your own coaching work, particularly in complex or difficult situations, or where coaching work is triggering your own “hot spots”. It will also allow you to be sure you are using best practice and adhering to the ethics and boundaries of the coaching industry. Supervision is also an opportunity to gain support in the form of ideas, information and suggestions from other coaches, as well as appropriate reassurance from peers and a supervisor.

ICF-accredited coaches can use up to 10 hours of Coaching Supervision towards the required ICF Core Competencies (CCEs) needed for re-credentialing.

Supervision has three key functions:

Normative
The supervisor accepts and shares responsibility with the coach for ensuring that the coach’s work is professional and ethical and operating within the ICF code of ethics.

Formative
The supervisor develops the skills, theoretical knowledge or personal attributes that will enable the coach to become an increasingly skilled practitioner of coaching.

Restorative
The supervisor listens, supports, champions, inspires and challenges the coach when doubts or insecurities arise

Supervision often involves the presentation of specific case studies by the coach.

The reflective space enables the coach to acquire a deeper understanding of what is taking place within the client system, the relationship between the coach and client and the coach themself. The learning addresses all three functions described above.
